How Friction Stir Welding Works
Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process that joins materials without melting the base material.
A rotating FSW tool generates frictional heat and plasticizes the material around the joint. Under controlled pressure and tool movement, the softened material flows and consolidates to form a solid-state joint.
Because the material remains in the solid state, FSW avoids many defects associated with melting and solidification in fusion welding. The process also offers low heat input, reduced welding distortion, and consistent joint quality, making it particularly suitable for aluminum alloys and precision manufacturing applications.
